Location:
Situated in South Western Europe, Spain is composed
of 17 independent regions subdivided in 50 provinces.
Between these, 6 regions (Andalusia, Aragon, Catalonia,
Baleares, Murcia, Valencia) and 2 independent
cities (Ceuta and Melilla) participate in the
Programme.
Economic activities: Spain has developed
its industry in the fields of textile, iron, steel,
metallurgy, automotive and the confection of shoes.
Agriculture is still very imoprtant and occupies
54 % of the soil. In addition, the tourism industry
brings an important contribution to the Spanish
Economy.
Socio-cultural activities: The Spanish
culture is impregnated of Catholicism and Spain
has a strong religious musical tradition. However,
many typical Hispanic musical styles exist like
the zarzuela, flamenco and the bolero. Ferias
and bullfights also belong to the very popular
Spanish traditions.
Important dates:
- November 20th, 1975: Death of Franco and end
of the dictatorship
- December 6th, 1978: Approval of the new constitution
that establishes a democratic regime
- 1986: Accession to the E.U.
