Surface:
131.990 km2 (of which 24,796 km represent
the insular part)
Population:
10 million inhabitants (density: 75,78 abitanti/km2)
Location:
Situated in the South-eastern side of Europe and
in the Southern part of the Balkan peninsula,
Greece is composed of 13 regions and subdivided
into 52 prefectures. The entire territory is concerned
by the Medocc programme.
Economic activities: With a strong foreign
debt and a less productive agriculture. Greece
still shows a certain delay in its economic development
(especially there is room of improvement in the
transport sector). Most of its activity is centred
around the agro-food sector, the chemical industry
and metallurgy. Tourism is in constant growth.
Socio-cultural activities: Greece has an
exceptional historical heritage enriched by the
Byzantine period, the influence of the Franks
and Venetians. The popular traditions are tied
to the orthodox religious festivities.
Important dates:
- 1974: return to the Republic of Greece
- 1981: accession to the EU.
