Population:
10 million inhabitants (density: 108,81 inhabitants/km2)
Location:
Portugal is subdivided in 7 regions (2 of which
are independent archipelagos). Only the two Mediterranean
regions of Algarve and Alentejo participate in
the Programme.
Economic activities: With a still less
developed economy, Portugal produces mainly consumer
goods in the fields of textile, paper, shoes and
electronics. Tourism remains predominantly local.
Socio-cultural activities: The Portuguese
culture is characterized by a triple Latin, Visigoth
and Arab-Muslim origin. Portugal is the country
of origin of the "Fado", a music and
popular song with strong nostalgic connotations.
Important dates:
- 25th April 1974: Coup d'état of the dictatorship
followed by the "Carnation Revolution"
- February 1976: Approval of the Constitution
- 1986: accession to the EU.
